How to Move in Cyprus Without Stress — 10 Expert Tips

By Moritsis Removals Ltd · Est. 2000 · 5 min read

Moving house is consistently ranked as one of life's most stressful events — but it doesn't have to be. After more than 5,000 successful moves across Cyprus since 2000, our team at Moritsis Removals has seen it all. Here are our top 10 tips to make your next move as smooth as possible.

1. Book Your Moving Company Early

In Cyprus, the most popular moving dates fill up fast — especially at the end of the month, during summer, and around school term changes. We recommend booking your movers at least 2–3 weeks in advance. During peak periods (July–September), book 4–6 weeks ahead.

Pro Tip

Mid-week moves (Tuesday–Thursday) are often cheaper and easier to schedule than Fridays and Saturdays.

2. Declutter Before You Pack

Moving is the perfect opportunity to get rid of things you no longer need. Go room by room and sort everything into three piles: keep, donate, and discard. The less you move, the lower your cost and the faster the job.

In Cyprus, you can donate furniture and household items to local charities or sell them on Facebook Marketplace before your move date.

3. Start Packing Non-Essentials Early

Don't leave all the packing to the last day. Start 2–3 weeks before your move with things you rarely use — books, seasonal clothing, decorations, spare linens. Leave the everyday essentials (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom basics) for the last day or two.

Pro Tip

Pack one "First Night Box" with everything you'll need the first night in your new home: phone charger, toiletries, change of clothes, kettle, mugs, and snacks. Label it clearly and keep it separate.

4. Label Every Box Clearly

Write on every box: the room it belongs to AND a brief description of the contents. For example: "Kitchen – pots and pans" or "Bedroom 2 – winter clothes". This saves enormous time when unloading and unpacking.

Use coloured tape or stickers to colour-code by room — this makes it even easier for your moving team to place boxes in the right rooms without asking every time.

5. Protect Your Fragile Items Properly

Plates should be wrapped individually and stored vertically (like records), not stacked flat. Glasses need padding inside and out. Electronics should ideally go back in their original boxes, or be wrapped in blankets and secured with tape.

Pro Tip

Use your own towels, t-shirts and socks as padding — it saves on bubble wrap and means you're packing two things at once.

6. Take Photos Before Disassembling Furniture

Before you take apart your bed frame, wardrobe, or TV unit, photograph it from multiple angles. This makes reassembly much easier. Also photograph the back of your TV and entertainment system so you remember which cable goes where.

7. Notify Everyone of Your New Address

Make a checklist of everyone who needs your new address: the municipality, your bank, insurance companies, utilities, subscriptions, your employer, and family. In Cyprus, you'll also need to update your address with the Civil Registry and Migration Department if applicable.

8. Plan for Parking and Access

One of the most common causes of delays on moving day in Cyprus is lack of parking for the moving truck. Check in advance whether you need to reserve a parking space near your old home and your new one. In central Nicosia and Limassol especially, narrow streets can cause problems with large vehicles.

Pro Tip

If your new home is in an apartment building, check if the lift is large enough for your biggest furniture. If not, our team will arrange the staircase plan in advance.

9. Keep Children and Pets Away on Moving Day

Moving day is hectic with doors constantly open, heavy furniture being carried, and lots of activity. Arrange for children to spend the day with grandparents or friends. For pets, either do the same or keep them in a quiet, closed room away from the action with water, food and their favourite toy.

10. Choose a Fully Insured Moving Company

Never hire a moving company that can't prove they are insured. Accidents happen even with the best teams — a scratched wardrobe, a dropped box, a scuffed wall. A reputable, insured mover will cover any accidental damage.

At Moritsis Removals, all our moves are covered by comprehensive insurance. We've been doing this since 2000 and our reputation is built on trust, care, and reliability.
